First look on the wedding day: seeing each other before everyone else watches.

Couple seeing each other for the first time in wedding attire on a path
From my photo archive.

The first look is the moment you see each other in wedding clothes for the first time — often before the ceremony, in a quiet place, without a row of guests behind you.

Some love the surprise at the altar. Others want that first glance private: less stage fright, more time together, and couple portraits before the day fills up. Both are right — what matters is what fits you.

A first look eases the afternoon: emotions and couple photos early, then more calm with guests and celebration.

Why couples choose a first look.

Before the ceremony you’re often tense. A protected moment together can drop shoulders before the organ or registry begins. The first tears and the first laugh then belong only to you — and to the pictures.

You can also bring part of the couple portraits forward. After the ceremony there’s more time for congratulations, groups and your guests instead of disappearing again straight away.

How to time it.

Count getting ready, travel and a buffer. A first look rarely needs a full hour — often 15–25 minutes plus a short walk is enough.

The place should sit close to your next stop: hotel, parents’ home, parking at the church or a quiet path near Remseck or Ludwigsburg. Long drives rarely pay off.

  • Set a time between being ready and the ceremony start.
  • Choose a private, reachable place.
  • Tell witnesses or drivers about the meeting point.

First look with witnesses or parents.

Some couples see each other alone first, then bridesmaids or parents join. That creates natural reactions — cheers, hugs, shared nerves — without spoiling the ceremony.

If you want to keep the classic entrance, the first look stays optional. In our prep talk we decide which variant feels right for your day.
